How to Prevent Eye Problems and
Improve Eye Health
The “focus” in recent years has been about how to prevent and possibly reverse some of those eye problems
and improve eye health through the use of nutritional supplements and other natural ingredients. Many of
which are listed below.
·
Carotenoids
Carotenoids are found in carrots and other brightly colored vegetables. Beta-carotene is one
of the best known carotenoids. The body converts it to vitamin A. A lack of carotenoids in the diet can cause night
blindness. Vitamin A deficiency during childhood can cause permanent damage to the retina, resulting in permanent
blindness. Some trials have shown that increased intake of beta-carotene reduces the risk of the age-related
macular degeneration described in my last article.
·
Lutein and Zeaxanthin
Lutein and zeaxanthin are specific carotenoids found primarily in kale and other dark leafy
greens. Lutein, zeaxanthin and other carotenoids are found throughout the body. The concentration of lutein and
zeaxanthin is particularly high in the retina and the macula.
Research has shown that increased intake of lutein and zeaxanthin is accompanied by a
decreased risk of cataracts and age-related macular degeneration.
·
Omega-3 Fish Oil
Fish oil is one of the natural ingredients for improved eye health, because it provides a
unique omega-3 fatty acid called Docosahexaenoic acid or DHA. DHA is another nutrient that is highly concentrated
in the retina.
According to research, fish oil may help prevent age-related macular degeneration, cataracts
and other eye diseases. People who consume more omega-3 fish oil are less likely to have glaucoma, because the
supplement protects the optic nerve from damage.
L-carnosine is a di-peptide, similar to protein but containing fewer amino acids. L-carnosine
is the only nutrient known to help prevent glycation, which is a cause of aging throughout the body and plays a
role in a variety of age-related health problems.
Research suggests that l-carnosine may be beneficial for preventing eye problems like
cataracts and delaying the onset of presbyopia. In two studies, l-carnosine worked to reverse cataracts that had
already formed in 80-90% of cases.
·
Bilberry Extract
Bilberry extract has proven to be beneficial for reversing night blindness and myopia. In 97%
of cases studied, the extract slowed the growth of cataracts. The benefits are due to the special bioflavonoids and
other nutrients found in the plant. This is one case in which the combination of nutrients works better than an
isolated nutrient found in the plant.
·
Glucosamine
Glucosamine is one of the important natural ingredients for improved eye health. The nutrient
is found in many structures within the eye. Research suggests it may be beneficial for glaucoma, as it reduces
pressure within the eye.
·
HALOXYL & EYELISS
Haloxyl and eyeliss are two ingredients that address the outwardly visible indicators of eye
problems. Creams containing the ingredients have been shown to reduce bags, puffiness and crow’s feet, the wrinkles
at the edges of the eyes caused by squinting. Not only can you improve the health of your eyes with natural
ingredients. You can improve their appearance, too.
